Qualitative modeling for middle-school students

چکیده
Qualitative modeling offers the potential for engaging middleschool students in scientific modeling. This paper discusses the design decisions underlying VModel, a qualitative modeling environment that has been used in several studies in Chicago Public School classrooms. We discuss how these decisions were influenced by the constraints imposed by the conceptual development of the students and the middle school curriculum and environment. We describe the simplified subset of QP theory used, pedagogical agents and other software scaffolds, and how within-state qualitative simulation (i.e., influence resolution) helps students improve their models. Some evidence that VModel can improve learning is provided, and plans for future work discussed.

VModel: A Visual Qualitative Modeling Environment for Middle-School Students
Learning how to create, test, and revise models is a central skill in scientific reasoning. We argue that qualitative modeling provides an appropriate level of representation for helping middle-school students learn to become modelers. We describe Vmodel, a system we have created that uses visual representations that enables middle-school students to create qualitative models. Software coaches ...

متن کاملHelping children become qualitative modelers
Early science education is essentially qualitative. Children must learn causal theories: what kinds of things happen, when they happen, and what their consequences are. Although modeling is a key skill in scientific reasoning, traditional modeling techniques do not express causal theories explicitly, and rely on higher mathematics (such as algebra) that children do not learn until later. We bel...
متن کاملExploring Middle School Science Students ' Modeling Process and Strategies When Using a Computational Modeling Tool
In this study, we explore and characterize middle school science students' modeling strategies when they are engaged in scientific modeling by the use of a computer-based modeling tool, Model-It. Three seventh grade science classes taught by three teachers at an independent school participated in the study. To capture students' actions, statements during the dynamic modeling process and cogniti...
متن کاملApplying cognitive developmental psychology to middle school physics learning: The rule assessment method
Cognitive developmental psychology often describes children’s growing qualitative understanding of the physical world. Physics educators may be able to use the relevant methods to advantage for characterizing changes in students’ qualitative reasoning. Siegler developed the “rule assessment” method for characterizing levels of qualitative understanding for two factor situations (e.g., volume an...
